What does Auckland’s construction and engineering sector offer skilled migrant workers?

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is experiencing considerable growth and investment, so the construction and engineering sector offers a wide range of diverse projects and opportunities to be involved in.

What makes Beca a great place to work?

We understand that our people are our greatest asset. We focus on creating an environment where people can bring their whole selves to work, because when people feel like they belong they can do what they do best.

Innovation and sustainability are at the heart of what we do at Beca. The biggest positive impact we can have on the planet is by working with our clients and communities to help achieve sustainable development outcomes for all. Our teams continually challenge and improve outcomes by looking for new, smarter ways of doing things. We’re excited to be bringing circular economies to life, helping to deliver a sustainable, prosperous future in Aotearoa New Zealand and all around the world.

Whether we’re delivering renewable energy solutions in the Pacific, working on an internal sustainable travel campaign, or collecting data for climate change research – there is always a huge variety of inspiring social, cultural, environmental and economic initiatives to be involved in across the business.

What kind of career progression or professional development opportunities do you provide for employees?

We aim to provide all our people with an equal opportunity to build a career that reflects their abilities and passions. There are lots of opportunities for development at Beca, including structured learning programmes for graduates right up to senior leadership.

  • Leadership development: Our leadership framework, Amplifying our Leaders, helps Beca leaders empower their teams to provide great client experiences that deliver improved shareholder returns.
  • Intermediate development: The Empower Programme has been designed specifically for our experienced team members to build key capabilities with the support of their peers. This includes mentoring, connecting with others across the business, and upskilling in key development areas.
  • Technical: We offer learning and development opportunities with technical group members who provide leadership and direction, in order to strengthen our people’s technical and professional depth and therefore improve the quality and consistency of our client service.
  • Graduate development: This two-year programme provides Beca graduates with the support they need to flourish in their first jobs out of university.

We also incentivise and recognise our employees who attain their relevant professional accreditation.

How does Beca embrace diversity?

Our Auckland office is home to more than 1200 people of many nationalities. 20 per cent of overall hires we make are from offshore.

Our diversity of skill and experience is also one of our strengths. The more diverse we are, the better our ideas, strategies and client solutions will be and the more we can represent our world and maximise creativity.

We also believe it is critical to the sustainability of our industry and our business that we have more women across all levels. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment that supports women to succeed, and are a founding member of the Diversity Agenda focused on creating greater gender balance in architecture and engineering.

We actively celebrate cultural diversity across Beca and are committed to enhancing our cultural diversity further. We have numerous initiatives underway to support this already, including a partnership with the South Pacific Indigenous Engineering Students (SPIES) to support Māori and Pacific students as they transition into their engineering careers.

How would you describe your workplace culture?

At Beca, our people are our priority. We are committed to growing an environment where employees can thrive and feel like they belong. Our values of care, partnership, tenacity and enjoyment all drive the way we operate.

We also put real emphasis on our team’s mental and physical wellbeing, with our Well Aware programme, which covers a full spectrum of health and wellbeing initiatives for our employees.

From an employer’s perspective, what support can be offered to someone considering moving to Auckland to live and work?
