City Link buses
Our Link bus services are a convenient and cheap way to get around Auckland’s city centre and inner suburbs – including top shopping and dining spots. They run very frequently, so there’s no timetable, and fares start at just 50 cents. Just look for the red, green or amber buses and wait at a matching bus stop. Find out more.
Driving – hiring a car, motorhome or motorbike
With an excellent motorway network, driving is a popular choice for anyone keen to discover more of Auckland and New Zealand. We’ve got lots of rental car companies to choose from – including the main international brands – offering everything from standard sedans and hatchbacks to motorhomes and motorcycles. Most major rental car companies have depots at Auckland Airport and in central Auckland.
In New Zealand, we drive on the left. Visitors from some countries may need a bit of adjustment, but for others, you’ll feel right at home.
You can legally drive in Auckland and New Zealand for up to 12 months per visit, with either a current driver's licence from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Make sure you have these organised before you arrive in New Zealand – check who can drive and what you’ll need on the NZ Transport Agency website.

Getting to and from Auckland Airport
Auckland's international and domestic airport terminals are about 45 minutes from downtown Auckland. Regular shuttles, transfers, private transport and bus services are all available 24 hours, seven days a week.
Taxi and shuttle ranks are located outside the arrivals area at the international terminal and outside the luggage collection area at the domestic terminal. Stop in at the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre in the international terminal for more information about getting to your destination from the airport.
Tours and hop-on, hop-off buses
Joining a tour lets you see the sights in comfort, while local guides share inside knowledge about our landmarks, heritage and culture. If you’re short on time and not sure where to go, jump on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour to visit some of the city’s main attractions and sightseeing spots. Cycling and walking
Get some fresh air while you sightsee – it’s easier than ever to get around Auckland by bike, with a number of new cycle paths popping up in the last few years (and more new ones on the way). Flat, easy cycleways along the waterfront or through parks are great for families or the casual explorer, or tackle a more challenging trail through bush or farmland.
