Screen Auckland is undertaking the Screen Sector Workforce Survey as part of research to better understand perceptions of screen sector careers across Tāmaki Makaurau and New Zealand.
Auckland is a major hub of New Zealand’s screen sector – which includes film, television, gaming, visual effects, immersive technologies, digital content, and animation. With global demand for content intensifying, the sector is growing rapidly and as a result, Auckland and New Zealand are facing a shortage of skilled workers.
To better meet the needs of the screen sector workforce now and in the future, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) – the home of Screen Auckland – is working to attract more Aucklanders into screen sector careers, as well as supporting the sector to retain and upskill existing talent.
The Screen Sector Workforce Survey will seek to understand the experience of working in the screen sector, including motivations, benefits and challenges, awareness and interest in upskilling within the sector.
A second phase of the research, supported by New Zealand Film Commission and Screen Wellington, will survey the prospective screen sector workforce across New Zealand, with a focus on understanding what attracts new talent to the sector.
The Screen Sector Workforce Survey follows the 2019 Screen Heads of Department (HOD) Skills Shortage Survey, which asked HODs to predict likely shortages in the current and future screen workforce.
Screen sector workforce development
Insights from the Screen Sector Workforce Survey will be used to help inform screen sector workforce development, support the sector to better forecast and plan for future demand, and raise the capacity and capability to meet the increased global demand for content.
